Alissia Cox-McKinnon – Next Generation Forestry Operator Cadet

How were you inspired to become a next generation forestry operator?
I was inspired by my grandfather, Graeme Cox, who has worked in the industry for a long time. I did a 4-day course with Arbre which was work experiences and it opened my mind more.

I explored my interests throughout my school which led me to be inspired and motivated to try it out. In the forestry industry and applied and was accepted to become a next generation forestry operator traineeship with JCH harvest.

What is the best thing about it?
Learning new skills, practicing on the machines receiving feedback to be a skilled operator one day and making amazing connections.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love sport and fitness, basketball, football and swimming,  spending time with friends and family and fishing.

What do you imagine yourself doing in 5 years?
Still working in the forestry industry and getting a full-time employment being a more skilled operator, and getting a house, a car, a boat, a dirt bike.

How would you recommend this program to other students?
I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to further their knowledge and skills in the industry or who would like to try something new and getting out to experience it.

Chance Coghill – Cadet Forester Program

How were you inspired you to become a Cadet Forester?
Opportunity to earn an income. I remember being about 12 years old and helping cut trees up with a bloke and enjoyed being outside. The opportunity came up when Arbre Hub visited school in grade 10 and I put my hand up as I liked the idea of working outside.

What is the best thing about it?
Learning from mentors as they have so much knowledge. I get to see the different environments.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Football, computer, hang out with friends.

What do you imagine yourself doing in 5 years?
To be a forester and a Forest Practices Officer (FPO).

How would you recommend this program to other students?
By getting people outside and exposing them to a trade in the forest. It’s about being outside and not stuck inside for work.

Last year Chance did the Cadet Forester Program (ASbA) Certificate II with Midway Tasmania for one day per week while he did year 11 at Launceston College.  Chance is currently doing his Certificate III over 2 days per week but he usually does 3.5 days each week.

Airon Denwer-Ripper has been his supervisor for both years but other staff have worked with Chance in sharing their knowledge and time with him and have all been very supportive and generous with their time.

Airon says that he is finding mentoring very satisfying as it is giving an opportunity to a keen young person and also assisting a new person to the Forest Industry and facilitating relevant training and experience.
