Working on Water 2023
23 October 2023 - 25 October 2023
Working on Water, or WoW, is a ‘hands on’ 3-day career awareness program that introduces year nine and ten students to the diversity of occupations and professions that are to be found in, on or near water. They range from the many roles involved in the aquaculture industry, through marine engineering and construction, tourism, under water exploration, to marine policing, research, and policy and planning.
The program explores the seafood and marine resource industry in four sections: marine science and research, marine resource management, seafood industry, and training and transferable skills. Students will gain an understanding of how the different components of the marine sector operate, and find out where to look online for key information relating to careers in the industry.
WoW programs vary each year but generally include tours of the Institute of Marine Studies and CSIRO, insight into jobs in the marine rescue sector, visiting aquaculture farms and hatcheries, experience what it’s like to be in control of a vessel using one of the world’s most advanced maritime simulators, science discussions with researchers, oyster farming practices, touring seafood processing plants and engaging with local fisherman and divers.
