From Penguin to Canberra: How a school-based traineeship set Lukas on a path to success

Lukas, from Tasmania’s North West, started his career journey while still in school, and it’s already taken him to some amazing places. Thanks to a school-based traineeship, he built real-world skills, grew his confidence, and found a job he’s passionate about.

“It’s a great opportunity to dive into and see if it’s something you want to do long term,” Lukas says.

At just 22, Lukas is working in a role that helps others learn and grow. His story shows how school-based traineeships can help young people discover their strengths and take the first steps toward a rewarding career.

Exploring opportunities can make a big difference

Lukas’s journey is a great example of how learning on the job can help students figure out what they want to do. It’s also a win for local businesses. Young people like Lukas are joining the workforce with real skills and experience.

“It’s a great way to improve your skills in the workforce and also gain a qualification out of it. Earning money while you learn is also a great bonus,” he says.

With support from trainers, mentors, and employers, Lukas is now working toward a full-time career in the same industry where he got his start, and he’s already making a difference.

“These traineeships have only made it clearer that this is the area I want to work in. It’s given me a clear vision – and helped me take the first steps.”

How it all started

Lukas grew up on the North West Coast and went to Penguin District School, then Hellyer College. In Year 10, one of his teachers noticed his potential and encouraged him to try a school-based traineeship through AFL SportsReady. It matched his Aboriginal heritage and his interest in business and admin.

“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do at that stage,” Lukas says. “But I thought undertaking a Certificate II in Business would be a great chance to build my skills and get some work experience.”

That decision changed everything. In 2023, Lukas started a Certificate III in Business. He became interested in how training organisations work and quickly moved on to a Certificate IV. Now, he’s using what he learned to support operations, train new staff, and manage admin tasks across the region.

“Now I’m sending out contracts, completing end-of-month reporting, and teaching one of our new trainees. It’s really rewarding to pass on what I’ve learned.” Lukas has come a long way. From not knowing what a GTO was (that’s a Group Training Organisation), to leading tasks that report directly to the CEO. He’s learned how to manage workloads, run meetings, take minutes, and deliver great customer service – all with confidence.

One of his proudest moments came in 2023, when he was chosen to join the Today’s Skills, Tomorrow’s Leaders program in Canberra. He visited Government House and met Her Excellency, Sam Mostyn AC, the Governor-General of Australia.

“The program was all about leadership and personal growth. It gave me a vision for what I want to do and helped me start that journey.”
