Learn, earn and build practical skills
Hydro Tasmania apprentices complete a four-year electrical or mechanical fitter apprenticeship, working alongside experienced tradespeople while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Apprentices receive paid, on-the-job training, with TAFE course and tuition fees covered by Hydro Tasmania. They also undertake additional training in areas such as first aid, working at heights, and asset management.
Trainee maintenance assistants work with experienced teams responsible for inspecting and maintaining dams, canals, waterways and hydropower assets across the state. The role offers the chance to work in unique outdoor environments, use specialist equipment, and develop a broad range of practical maintenance skills.
Both pathways are well suited to students who enjoy problem-solving, working with their hands, and learning in real-world environments.
What students need
Students must have completed Year 10 to be eligible for either program. Practical experience gained through activities such as woodwork, welding, vehicle maintenance, or personal projects can strengthen an application. Completing Year 12 or qualifications such as a Certificate II in Electrotechnology, Engineering Pathways, or Mechanical Fitting may also provide an advantage.
