Kickstart your career in Government

Female professional shaking hands

Are you completing Year 12 or are a recent Year 12 graduate ready to take the leap into a meaningful career? The Australian Government’s Career Starter Program is now open for applications – and it’s designed just for you.

This 12-month, full-time development program offers more than just a job. It’s a launchpad into the Australian Public Service (APS), where you’ll gain hands-on experience, earn a competitive salary, and study towards a nationally recognised qualification – all while being supported every step of the way.

What’s in it for you?

  • Permanent APS1 role in a participating government department or agency
  • Certificate IV in Government or Human Resource Management – fully supported while you work
  • Dedicated supervisor and team support
  • Networking events with fellow Career Starters across the APS
  • Pathway to promotion to APS2 upon successful completion

Whether you’re interested in customer service, policy and programs, technical support, or human resources, there’s a role tailored to your strengths and interests.

Choose Your Path

With just one application, you can express your preference for:

  • Generalist Government Roles – Dive into public service operations, policy, and tech support.
  • Human Resources Roles – Support recruitment, wellbeing initiatives, and HR policy.

Diversity Matters

The program proudly supports First Nations people and individuals with disability. If you need adjustments during the recruitment process, the team is ready to help.

From the Department of Defence to the Department of Treasury, there are thirteen agencies on board for 2026. Explore their work and find your fit in the public service.
